Tridentnav Systems monitors Volvo Ocean Race via AIS

2009-06-16 15:34

Tridentnav Systems navigation software Tridentnav ECS can now be configured to accept AIS input via TCP/IP. The program can thus read AIS data using a standard network connection, as a complement to the information from an AIS transponder or receiver connected via serial port. Right now, the function is being used to follow the competitants in Volvo Ocean Race.

AIS (Automatic Identification System) is a transponder system where ships at sea send their position and other information via VHF radio to other ships, to simplify navigation and avoid collisions.

The possibility of using AIS input via TCP/IP in Tridentnav Systems navigation software can be used for connection over the internet to an AIS server. The program can then follow hundreds of AIS targets, depending on what data the server delivers. The needed parameters are the IP address or server host name and TCP port number, and possibly user name and password for the connection.

Right now, AIS information via TCP/IP in Tridentnav ECS is used, in cooperation with True Heading, to follow the competitors in the sailing competition Volvo Ocean Race on a large screen at the hotel Seglarhotellet in Sandhamn. The installation there will also be used during the coming Gotland runt competition.
